What to pack in your diaper bag? – checklist for the new moms

When it comes to new babies, there are so many important areas that new parents need to learn – how to swaddle, how to keep track of immunization, how to keep track of their wet diapers and yes..what to pack in your diaper bag? Being a mom of two kids, I can give you some highlights on what I have on my list for a diaper bag.

  • Diapers and diaper rash cream: New baby and diapers go hand in hand. But how many to pack? They say 1 diaper for every two hours but it may vary with every baby. Packing a
few extra diapers are always helpful. Also, have a small tube of diaper rash cream.

  • Baby Wipes: I would prefer to pack full pack of wipes. Whenever I am traveling
International, I mostly use Pampers baby wipes but when now I know one more brand
which has added to my list – Mother Sparsh Unscented Baby Wipes. These wipes are
99% water based, 100% bio-degradable and they are good for sensitive skin. Can we ask
for anything more? It is easily available on Firstcry, Amazon, Flipkart.

  • Burping cloth and washcloth: Newborn or infants tend to puke after they drink their milk. Babies skin is very soft. Sometimes, the fabric of our dress or the beads that enhances its beauty can poke your baby’s skin which can turn into rashes. It is always good to have a burping cloth and washcloth on your shoulder when you are holding them.

  • Diaper changing pad: Most diaper bags come with their own changing pad, so if you
want to use those then that is totally fine. Somehow, I feel its small so I always carry a
slightly bigger diaper pad. It really helps in public restrooms and in flights.

  • Disposable diaper bags: I usually carry scented diaper bags. They work great for solid
diapers. No more odor. These also come in handy for things like when baby has a
blowout. Since, we can’t just throw the outfit, use one of these convenient bags to toss
the soiled outfit into until you can get home to wash it. This brings us to our next item,

  •  Onesies/Alternate outfit: You have to be prepared for an unexpected change of clothes.
I prefer to pack soft hosiery clothes instead of jeans and a shirt.

  •  Formula and water: If your baby is formula fed then you don’t have to carry the jumbo
formula tub. Take out a good amount of formula in a dispenser. Depending on how long
you are going to stay out, carry one or two empty bottles.

  • Snacks and mealtime essentials: Depending upon your baby’s age, carry baby food and
snack options. Few of my favorites are Gerber crunchies, fruit loops, sliced apples etc.
There are many handy utensils that can be of great help when you are on the go. Sippy
cups (for water, juice, milk), Squirt spoon (for pureed food), Fresh Fruit feeder (for those
who are learning to eat independently).

  • Blanket, Pacifiers, toys: If your baby has any favorite toy, or pacifier (if your child uses
one) or loved his/her blanket then never miss to carry that. They are a lifesaver for
parents in tricky situations. Apart from all this, don’t forget to carry your personal items. Cell phone, Wallet, Driver’s license, keys, Sanitizer, Pen and paper, Book/Magazine.

Few more tips for the diaper bag:
-Use a waterproof diaper bag
-Look for a diaper bag having multiple compartments
-Look for other options if your current bag does not serve your purpose. Sometimes bags which  are not meant to be a diaper bag work better.

Who says, after you become a mother you cannot go out as you used to go? I agree life
changes, our priorities change. Taking care of new baby can be over-whelming. But with little bit of planning, even a new mom can enjoy her outings.
