The three magic words that can make a big difference in someone’s life

It is hard to believe that we have been living through the coronavirus pandemic since the early days of 2020. For many, these past few months feel more like a decade. As communicators, though, we know that meaning is conveyed not just in what you say but in how you say it.

After all, we need such words to keep going, find happiness around us and spread joy among the people around us. But first, let’s say our kid’s favorite three magic words – Mishka-Mushka-Mickey Mouse. Let’s begin.

  1. You aren’t alone
  2. I am listening
  3. I understand you
  4. I assure you
  5. I am there (for you)
  6. I trust you
  7. You are strong

There is so much to write on each of these words. I will try my best to convey my thoughts behind sharing these words with you.

The three magic words that can make a big difference in someone’s life

You aren’t alone:

These are the first three magic words. Just by saying these can give strength to someone. It gives hope that someone is there for them. They are not the only ones sailing in this boat. This feeling is so full of hope that it can sail them through any challenging situation. Next to this is..

I am listening:

There is a difference between hearing and listening. When someone is talking, we mostly hear. But how many times do we listen? Our monkey mind is so occupied with other thoughts that sometimes, we don’t even recall half of the conversation. We think that we are listening, but our mind is not 100% present there. Our brain tries to recollect the words and connect the dots. And if we are lucky, then we can recall the entire conversation. So, these three magic words, “I am listening,” should be used very carefully.

I understand you:

When we use these words, we assure the person that whatever s(he) is saying, they will not be judged. And we will try to the best of the abilities to put ourselves in their shoe and try to understand their situation, perspective, and views.

I assure you:

Sometimes, people want to hear some assuring words from you. It gives them strength and confidence. Even if they are 100% sure about you but still when you say it, it works like magic.

I am there (for you):

No matter what you do, I am there for you no matter when you need me. These three words are so powerful and full of warmth and care. If you are not there in person, but if your friend knows that you will be there with them emotionally, that is also enough for them. That will give them the strength to move forward. Because when they look back, they will find you there.

I trust you:

Today, having trust in someone or making yourself trustworthy for someone is one of the most valuable possessions one can have. It takes years to build trust and can take a few seconds to lose it. If we can give this gift to anyone, then we should consider ourselves lucky.

You are strong:

When someone is in a vulnerable state and is doubting their capabilities, these three words can bring a much-needed strongness to face the difficult situation. Today, many are not with their families, parents. They only know how hard it is to stay strong. Whenever you can, convey this message to your friends and family that they are strong and they will sail through this situation.

Words have the power. They can create, and they can destroy. If you have any more words in your list, don’t forget to add them to the list.
