Rakshabandhan Diary-How do only two sisters feel on Rakshabandhan?

Wait, seeing the title, do you think that I will narrate any emotional story here? I want to know what your first thoughts were? I am not going to make you emotional by telling you any sister saga. We are two sisters. We don’t have a brother. I mean, we do have cousin brothers but no real brother. I mentioned this because, while growing up, we have been asked this question quite a few times. “Bhai nahi hai? Do behene ho?” (you don’t have a brother. You are the only two sisters?) I never understood the reason and importance of this question. Why and from where this question arises? And what is the need for it?

We are two sisters. So what? We never gave a thought to it. Maybe because of the bond we share with our cousins and because we were never treated differently or made feel sad that since we don’t have a brother, we will not be able to celebrate Rakshabandhan or Bhaidooj.

Our two cousin brothers are more than just cousins to us. They don’t have a sister, so our feelings are mutual. Luckily, we stayed just a 4-hour drive by road. So, on any occasion or during school holidays, either they would come to my parent’s place, or we used to go there. We played tons of silly games together, cracked jokes, and got many scolding from elders for making too much noise during our holidays, but one thing that everyone knew very well was what we four meant to each other. When all four of us are married, we never fall short of words while narrating our childhood tales to our better halves.

Now, coming to how do two sisters feel on Rakshabandhan?

Well, I can’t speak on everybody’s behalf, but talking about me and my sister then, we never felt sad for not having a real brother. We were more than enough for each other. And as I said, we have such caring brothers then what else do we need? I have been living outside India for 15 years which means I have missed 15 Rakshabandhan, but every year, my sister sends our Rakhis to our brothers. And as we all know, during festival season, the postal service also takes its own sweet time, so even if our Rakhis are not delivered on time, we know that our love and bond will not be affected. Because Rakshabandhan is not only limited to tying the Rakhi. It is much more than that.

When my son was born, many of my friends said good- “your family is complete now”. I had always wished for a second daughter (maybe because we are two sisters), but God had different plans for us. My daughter asked me the same question that used to come to my mind. I told her, “it’s their perspective”. There is nothing wrong with having two girls or two boys. By having an opposite gender, you get to celebrate brother-related festivities as well. The same will apply if a boy gets a sister. I guess I convinced her to some extent.

So, we two sisters are proud to have cousin brothers. And we never felt the need to have a brother. The sibling bond is always unique and precious. It is not dependent on if there are two sisters or two brothers or brother-sister. It’s all about sharing and spending memorable time and creating unforgettable memories that you can cherish forever.

  1. Such a beautiful thought you have shared with this post. Being a mom of two girls, I know the felling when people commented that “ladka nahi hai”, but I always feel it does not matter as long as we are family and content as a family. Sibling relationship is most amazing relationship in the world and we should cherished it without making a fuss about gender things.

  2. Reading this piece took me back to the conversation I had with my daughter just a few days ago. Being a single child she gets lonely on Rakhi, her cousins are far away and meeting them on this occasion is impossible.
Yet, we try to make her feel comfortable and occupied during Raksha Bandhan. It’s good to have family nearby during festivals.

  3. I can completely relate to the post as we are sister siblings and have a many cousin brother but on rakshabandhan none was nearby, so we used to get creative with decoration and all. Now a days siblings tie rakhi to each other irrespective of gender, so in a way it is good to do as you don’t miss the fun of the festivals.

  4. My thoughts resonate with yours dear. It is immaterial if we are two sisters or single or have cousins, it is how deeply we feel about it or not
