Raja’s Pet Camel : The Magic Of Hope

Being a parent to a 4-year-old, I have to come up with exciting stories. Now, when I am homeschooling my kiddo, then the circle time they usually do at school is also part of our routine and bedtime stories. Even if I am a writer, but from where, this mommy will come up with stories every day? Thanks to Anita for sending me a copy of her book. This interesting storybook – “Raja’s Pet Camel -The Magic of Hope” gave this mommy a break from creating stories at least for a few days.

Let’s look inside Raja’s Pet Camel:

Raja’s Pet Camel – The Magic of Hope written by author Anita Nahta Amin and illustrated by Parwinder Singh, is a beautiful story about a young boy’s journey finding his forever pet, Kamal. It also helps young readers to learn more about Indian culture.

Raja, while coming back from school, finds a lone baby camel crying. Being a kid, he feels bad about her and comes close to her. The baby camel gets scared at first, but soon two become friends and start to play. Raja decides to bring his pet “Kamal” (Raja decides to call her Kamal) home hoping that his father addressed as “Bapu” in the story, will be happy with his decision and accept Kamal as their new pet. His father agrees to keep Kamal until someone claims her. Raja was delighted just with this feeling that Kamal can stay with them. He wanted to make the best of their time together.

But things start to go a little out of control when Kamal began to give them and the villagers a hard time. It reaches a point that Raja’s father decides to sell her at the local fair. Raja tries to convince his father but no luck. Finally, Bapu, Raja and his pet Kamal set off to the local fair. Raja want no one to take Kamal from him. So, what will he do to keep Kamal? Will anyone buy Kamal? Read the book to find out!

Raja’s Pet Camel also includes 10 Facts about the Thar Desert in India at the end of the story. This can be productive and reflective conversations about Indian culture and how it may differ from other cultures.

Another thing that caught my attention was some easy exercises that parents can do with their kids. Not just for this book but, they can continue doing it with every book they read. Here is a glimpse of it.

Anita Nahta Amin is the author of several forthcoming chapter books and many short stories for children. Her work has been featured in a variety of children’s literary magazines. Her family roots stretch across India from the vibrant camel-filled desert in Rajasthan to Kolkata. She lives in Florida with her husband and twin children. She would love a pet camel, too, as long as it doesn’t eat all of her dates.

  1. The cover of the book is so cute and the story sounds interesting. I am curious to know if Raja will be able to keep kamal with him forever. I am sure kids will love this book.

  2. The first thing which catches my attention is the cover of the book. I really loved the magical tale, will get this for my kids to read!!

  3. Wow..I am so surprised by all the technology adopted for story telling. Kids these days have so much to learn but most parents just give them screens and don’t monitor what they r watching. Such stories would keep their imagination running.

    1. I agree Harjeet. Technology has made many things simpler but parents have to find a balance between on screen and off screen time. Nothing can replicate the in-person learning.

  4. This seems like an interesting book for kids .This is a story I would love to read to my kids too which teaches about compassion for animals in their . You’ve reviewed it so well

  5. I feel like reading stories to kids is one thing and to make it fun/interactive in a subtle way is another thing. Some illustrators and authors have shared useful tips and hacks in the past, but nothing beats these ‘before’ and ‘post’ reading suggestions. This one sounds look a fab book!
