Quick Chaat with Pita chips

It’s mid May and Houston people are blessed to have temperatures still in 2-digits. It rains on & off which sets the weather for chaat – my all time favorite street food..:) My daughter has also developed her taste bud for Pani Puri so she is a good company. Over the weekend, we enjoyed an impromptu Pani Puri party (that’s what my daughter calls it..:)). I am among those who don’t want to eat regular meal during weekend. I had Green Vaatana (green peas available in Indian stores) and Samosa in my freezer so decided to make Papdi chaat. But ooppsss..I didn’t have Papdi. So, I thought of using Pita chips instead. And believe me it was tasting good. Next time if you want to make chaat and you don’t have Papdi then try this Quick Chaat with Pita Chips. Also, sharing samosa recipe. You can also make Kachori if you have planned for this Chaat party ahead of time.

For Chaat you will need:

  • Pita Chips – I used baked. Mine were Garlic flavor
  • Cooked Vatana or Chhole  – make it as flavorful as you can.
  • Chopped Onion
  • Chopped Tomato
  • Chopped Cilantro
  • Tamarind Chutney
  • Cilantro Chutney
  • Yogurt – pouring consistency (optional)
  • Sev
  • Salt
  • Chili powder
  • Cumin powder

Assembling Chaat:

  • Take a bowl in which you will be serving the chaat. Place few Pita chips.
  • On top of that, pour few spoons of prepared vatana/chhole.
  • Add onion, tomato, yogurt, salt, chili powder/green chili, cumin powder.
  • Sprinkle sev.
  • Garnish it with cilantro.

Preparing Vatana (you can use yellow vatana as well)- Soak Vatana overnight. Pressure cook it. Heat some oil in a pan, add finely chopped onion, tomato, turmeric powder, asafoetida (hing), crushed ginger-garlic-green chili (I prefer fresh). Saute them. Then add cooked vatana. Mix it. Add salt coriander powder. Add water if needed. Making Vatana needs preparation. You can also use Canned Garbanzo.

    1. Thanks Kushi, it was just a trial and turned out good. Crunchy pita and hot & flavorful vatana creates a great combination.
Thanks for checking. Hope you will try it soon. Do share your experience…

    1. Absolutely Rachna. When you want something quick, spicy and tasty but neither you want to spend hours standing in the kitchen nor making a trip to Indian store just to get Papdi this is a very hand option..

I saw your Pista Paan recipe. Sounds interesting..

      Thanks for visiting!!
