There is no elevator to success

Today, Sammy was happy more than anything. After all, he was going to sit in his independent cabin. He got his much-awaited promotion. He was waiting for George to share this news. George was senior to him and has always been his friend and mentor. He used to work in the same company but recently got transferred to a different location in a new role. While having their lunch, Sammy said, “George do you remember what you told me last year? Now I understood the meaning of those words. George couldn’t recall his words but Sammy remembered their conversation word-to-word.

“Sammy was not able to understand what went wrong in his career when he was very confident to get a promotion. Today was an important day for Sammy. He reached at work ahead of time and was quite confident to get the news he was expecting. But things didn’t go how he expected. His colleague got the position with a pay hike what he was hoping to get? He was frustrated, irritated. This didn’t fit in his definition for success.

“What’s the use of those long hours of work? Staying up late at night to complete next day’s presentation, always showing initiative in any new project? Everything was a waste. I will have to wait for, God knows how many more years to get my dream role. Again, I am back to square one. Those who say work hard, success will follow you. All that is a nothing but just words that look fancy and inspiring. It’s not so pleasing in reality.” Sammy was going on without any pause. “It’s not like that Sammy. Hard work never goes in waste. You will see the results soon. Maybe, you need more time, more experience to fit into that role. Maybe, this might not be the right time. Keep trying, work hard.” George tried to encourage Sammy as he always used to do whenever Sammy felt low.

Sammy was a very ambitious young man who wanted success at any cost. His main goal was to work in a multi-national firm and start climbing the corporate ladder just like George. He was hard-working, smart but one thing that differentiated him from George was their attitude. Sammy was quite impatient. He wanted success at any cost. Not that he wasn’t ready to work hard but he wanted immediate results. George kept on explaining to him that there is no shortcut to success. It’s like the stairs that you take to reach to the top. But Sammy was not ready to accept it. According to him, it was easy for George to say this as he is already at the top management.

Today’s review was a big set-back for Sammy. But since George was there as always, he could handle it in a matured manner. “Sammy, today it might look tough to you accept it but that’s the truth. Always remember, when you get things easily you lose the importance of that but when you earn it that the true success.”George gave his success mantra to his friend. “

Today, Sammy could see his dream come true. It took almost one year for Sammy to get on to the role he always wanted to. As he recalled last year’s incident with George, he wasn’t able to thanks him enough for teaching him the true meaning of success. “There is no elevator to success. We  have to take stairs to reach the top.”
