Katyar Kaljat Ghusli – a treat for your family

Katyar Kaljat Ghusli

Many of you must be thinking what is this and what I am talking about? So, “Katyar Kaljat Ghusli” is the name of a Marathi movie that we watched last weekend. Mothers Gurukul is not a movie review platform. But sometimes we experience something exceptionally good and which sits in our mind, and touches our heart. Those are the times when we don’t mind going little off-beat. I have experienced something similar last weekend. It was a melodious-musical weekend worth spending with my family. Thanks to Houston Marathi Mandal for arranging a screening of this wonderful movie “Katyar Kaljat Ghusli” for its Houston audience which was recently released in India. This movie is truly a treat for your eyes and ears. I have always been an admirer of Marathi theater & classical music. And this movie was superb in all respects. Especially, for today’s generation, it’s a gift to go on a journey of 45-50 years old musical tradition of classical, semi-classical and contemporary music. Our 7-year old daughter also enjoyed the movie till the last scene. She didn’t ask us even once “can we go home”. As I walked out of the theater I found myself humming the compositions and listening to it while driving back home.

So, now the point is why I am writing a full post for this movie on Mothers Gurukul? No doubt the direction, acting, sets, music, songs, dances are mesmerizing but this movie conveys a deep message to its audience. I have not seen the original play but I have heard few of the songs earlier. Even for Non-Marathi speaking people, this movie is worth watching. The title “Katyar Kaljaat Ghusli” literally means “A Dagger went through the Heart”. “Katyar Kaljat Ghusli” is a Marathi musical play (Sangeet Natak), originally released in 1967. And it has re-created its magic in the form of a movie (with some needed changes). Converting a play into a movie keeping the essence/message intact is not an easy task. But Katyar is a rich treasure of music and an impeccably woven story of generosity, deceit and realization. My daughter was asking whom I liked the most. It was hard to pick. Each one of the performances was flawless. Every actor has made a deep impression in his or her role.

It beautifully conveyed the message that while reaching the stars, if you are able to stay away from ego then that is the true win. No matter how many success stories you create but if you bend down in front of your ego then all that success is nothing but a waste.

Secondly, it beautifully defined the difference between Art & Knowledge.

Thirdly, with pure dedication, passion, positive attitude, and proper guidance from Guru (teacher) nothing is impossible. It showed that Guru (teacher) is not just who teaches or pass on his/her talent to the shishya (student) but s(he) is someone who shows you the right path.

There is lot more to write and say but I will leave that to you now to tell your fellow readers what have you felt after watching this movie.

(This is not a promotional post. These are purely my personal inputs after watching the movie which I thought of sharing with you.)
