Colors and Mood: How colors affect our mood and dressing sense?

I have always been fond of light colors. Lighter shades of blue, green, purple still attracts me more. Earlier, whenever I had to shop for clothing, I would pick lighter shades of green  or blue. For a very long time, my wardrobe was full of light colors until I made an effort to start shopping for bright colors. And when I wore them, not only I got compliments as it was a change for others but I felt good myself.

Colors are everywhere. Starting from food industry to Interior designing, colors have always shown their charm whenever used wisely. Fashion industry is very much dependent on colors. They affect us to a great extent more than what we think. Different clothing colors exude different feelings and meanings, and colors can affect-and reflect-our mood.

In our society colors defines occasions as well. For e.g. In India, we prefer bright colors like Red, Maroon for weddings. There is something called color psychologythat decides our mood. Before we dive into this ocean of colors, first let’s see what holds us back from exploring new colors when it comes to changing our wardrobe?

  • Not used to of other colors: We are in a habit of picking the same old colors every time that trying out something new makes us feel uncomfortable. But we need to give other colors a chance to prove themselves. Isn’t?

The struggle of choosing the perfect outfit for a particular occasion is already real enough, but add the consideration of color psychology to the mix and it’s near impossible. Let me help you with this. I am sharing whatever I have read and learnt so far about colors through my observation, personal experience, and reading.

Let’s see how colors can change your mood:

  • Blue: Let me start with my first favorite. Thinking about it makes me feel cool, calm. Why do we feel good when we look at the blue water? This is because blue has the magical effect of making you feel relaxed. It reduces your heart rate and calms you down.

 

  • Green: Shades of green makes you feel calm as it associates with nature. It makes you feel refreshed and reduces stress. This is my second favorite color.

 

  • Red: The color red empowers and draws attention toward the wearer. Red is one of the most favorite colors when it comes to date-nights. Red rose, Red dress, Red lipstick – all this creates a sense of intensity.

 

  • Orange: Orange too has the charm alike red but it is considered to be more soothing. It is a vibrant color that will put you in a positive, energetic mood.

 

  • Yellow: You can call it uplifting yellow. Have you seen smiley faces are always in yellow? Yellow cheers you up. Yellow is also associated with intelligence and inspiration.

 

  • Purple: Falls into the category of cool colors, purple is considered as slightly sophisticated color and is associated with luxury. It is a color that helps in relieving anxiety.

 

  • Pink: Talking about colors and not discussing Pink? How can that be possible? Pink, the most favorite among girls. Also, known as girly-girl’s color, pink associates with romance and happiness.

 

  • White: We all know white means peas, serenity, simplicity, intelligence. It can be a perfect contrast when you want to bring out the other color you are wearing.

 

  • Black: We associate black with power, sincerity, and authority. Mostly, people wear black for job interviews, business meeting, promotion for the same reason.
