Guest Post: Introducing your kid to the world of Photography

Each one us has a hobby or some area that we feel connected with. But you never know when that hobby gets converted into a passion or sometimes even a profession. Same thing applies on kids. Some kids are naturally talented and have a bent for creativity. Try to encourage it. Whether it be painting, music, photography or any any other form, creativity is God given, so let it blossom.

Today’s Guest Post is on the same topic. You have met her before through Mom With Her Story section. Jayashree J from Jays Fotography doesn’t need any introduction to Mothers Gurukul readers.. Considering her profession I asked her if she can write something about Kid’s photography. So, lets read what Jayashree J has to say…

Photography is an art and it surely helps to nurture one’s creative mind. This statement is not only true for adults but for kids also. It is always better to introduce kids to photography at their young age which opens up a new world of excitement for them to improve their creativity skills. When you plan to introduce your kids to photography follow the below mentioned key point’s which will make their journey into photography more exciting.

  • Which Camera to go for your kids?

My answer to this question is just keep it simple. A simple point and Shoot camera which weighs very less is more than enough to drive your kid’s creativity skills. Do not go for Fancy and bulky Cameras as this might be instable in young kid’s hands. A light weight camera with a simple button click is what they need.

  • What Photography course should I put them to?

Do not plan for any photography course. Let them explore on their own. Do not impose any concepts on them. The best way to learn photography is to learn by experience and let them Shoot, Shoot, Shoot whatever they like. As parent, make sure you spend time with your kid and go through every photo they have shot and give them your feedback.

  • I am not a photographer. How can I give my feedback?

You need not be a photographer to give feedback. You are the best mentor for your kid. Keep your mentoring as simple as possible and this feedback is very important and will help them to take their photography skills to next level.

  • What to Photograph?

Anything on and down under the Sky can be photographed. It will take a while for each of them to identify their area of interest and my advice is to ask the kids to shoot anything they like. Plan for family outings and ask your kid to take the camera whenever they head outside and ask them to capture the moments. Over a time period based on their interest they will start focusing on specific areas and that is the time for the parents to upgrade their Camera to the type of genre your kid’s are interested in

  •  Photography Competitions

We need to encourage our kids to participate in various photography related competition. The main focus not being to win but will expose them to other kid’s photography work. This will give them an opportunity to improve their work looking at what others are doing. Ask them to participate in various Photography exhibitions and ask them to exhibit their pictures.

  • Pursuing Photography as a full time Career

Photography today offers lucrative jobs in variety of fields. If you notice a keen interest on photography then you should encourage your kid to pursue their passion and take this as their full time career.

Finally do not push and over do anything. Some kids might not find interest after a while in which case we should not force them. If we see continuous interest then it is our responsibility to ensure we put them on right track and I hope the above mentioned points will help you to guide your kid in the field of photography.
