“We know dance is her life but we are sorry. We did our best.” Natasha heard doctors explaining something to her parents. She could see her Dad’s expressions from the half-opened door. She couldn’t hear the exact words but whatever she heard was enough to give her an idea about some mishap.

Natasha was an outstanding Bharatnatyam dancer and wanted to pursue it as her career. Dance was her life. Her teacher was proud of her and after she gave her the first chance to perform on the stage, she knew there is something special in Natasha.

“Maa-Paa, what happened? What were the doctors telling you? I couldn’t hear the whole conversation but I heard a few words.” Natasha wanted to know why her parents looked upset outside and why they are behaving normally in front of her.

“They were explaining to us how to take care of you at home, Natasha. We will be going back in a day or two. Now, you should take some rest.” Her dad didn’t tell her anything at that moment.

While Natasha was resting, her parents went out to have a talk with the doctors. They were almost going to press elevator button when they heard Natasha’s scream.

“Paa…where are you? Maa..what happened to my leg? What’s wrong with me?” The anesthesia effect was going down. The first thing she couldn’t feel was her right leg. She was still weak to remove her blanket and check. Her parents immediately called the doctors.

“Calm down Natasha. I will explain you everything. First, calm down please.” One of the doctors started talking.

“How can I be calm? I can’t I feel my right leg.” Natasha was still in shock.

“Natasha, you met with an accident. After going over your case, discussing every possibility and their success rate, we had no other option than to… We wanted to give you another chance but…we are sorry. We took the second opinion as well.” Senior doctor was explaining to her.

Natasha was shocked. She was speechless. She never dreamt to face this day in her life. She wanted to stay alone for a while. After everyone left, she closed her eyes. She could see herself dancing on stage. And suddenly she remembered her Guru (teacher).

A couple of hours of hours passed by. She called her Maa and Paa. When they came inside what they saw was unbelievable. Natasha was holding the side of the bed and was sitting with her left leg on the ground. She had a new glow on her face. She had a ray of hope, confidence. “Paa, I want to talk to the doctors.” she said with a smile.

“Sure, they are going to come to see you in a while.”Natasha’s dad was surprised to see their daughter’s eyes which had a shine.

Doctor’s came to check her and gave her permission to go home. They were also stunned to see Natasha.

Natasha started talking in a very calm voice, “Doctor, have you heard about Sudha Chandran? She was a Bharatnatyam dancer. She met with an accident and lost her one leg but she still continued dancing. So, if I also get an artificial leg then I would be able to continue dancing right?”

Ohh yes..definitely. It will not be easy though but can be possible. I was going to talk about this option with your parents but I am really surprised and happy to have a patient like you who is thinking about possibilities even in this state. You are an inspiration to many. Kudos to you..

Thanks, Doc. I remembered my Guru’s words – “No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dream that you wish will come true.”

Amazing. You are lucky to have a teacher like her and we are lucky to know you. Keep on going. For you, the sky is the limit.
