Importance of Early Reading in Hindi

(This article was originally posted at HindiGym.)

In one of my previous posts on Hindi learning, I shared the techniques that helped mt daughter in learning to write Hindi. Today’s post talks about the ‘importance of early reading in Hindi’.

We all would agree that books are our best friends. There is no other friend as loyal as a book. As they say- “A good book on your shelf is a friend that turns its back on you and remains a friend.” Early reading has its own importance. It not only develops an interest in reading but it will also help your child in getting comfortable to the language at an early age. Learning a new language can be interesting and challenging at the same time. But if the foundation is strong then the path is smooth.

Books being the best source of knowledge play an integral role in this learning process. Let’s see how we can make it a fun process just by following a simple notion of early reading in Hindi and putting it in our practice. Importance of early reading Hindi can be many. I have consolidated these few points for you…
  • Bed-time story: We all read bedtime story. Then why not to include a story from any of your or your kiddo’s favorite Hindi book? I do it with my daughter. Alternate days we read one story in Hindi. The other day, she came back home from school telling me that they were learning about Ocean and Sea creatures and she had explained her class the story we read a night before (The story was on a turtle). I was very happy to hear that she can translate the whole Hindi story into English and narrate it to her class. It made me feel proud and (I know it may sound childish) it was a certificate that my Hindi teaching & reading is working for her. 🙂

  • Make the story telling time interesting: With young kids, use some props like puppets. Ask your child to hold the puppet and you read. Then take turn. Of course for their part, they need to know to read in Hindi. Do tone variation. Then only they will be into reading and listening. Kids who come to me for learning Hindi, whenever we are reading any story, I always tells them that no need to pen down all the words. Instead I tell them to pay attention to my tone and slowly you will get the meaning. Try to memorize the words. Next time when they will hear the words, they need not have to look for the page.
