America is a big country. Big malls, big buildings, everything is big here. Starting with vegetables to houses, you will find everything big. After coming here, when I first went to the grocery store, I was surprised to see the size of vegetables. It made my head spin. Here, onions are triple the size of what I had seen in India; three Indian potatoes are equal to one potato that we get here. The same is with the bell-pepper. If you are like me who likes stuffed Shimla Mirchi (bell pepper) or Karela (bitter gourd) for that matter, then hold on. You will be shocked to see the big bell pepper. While cooking, if you have seen your mom using one onion back home then, here, you will need 3/4thof it. You will have to re-calculate your measurements.

Today’s topic reminds me of a funny incident from my initial days in the USA. While I was trying to adjust to the new country, I was also inviting friends over. On one such get-together, decided to make South India – Dosa, Sambhar Vada, and Lemon Rice was on the menu. A budding chef in me was eager to feed her guests. It was my first time making South India. So far, I had always seen my mom making it. Never gave it a try. On top of that, I had called friends with their parents. Today, when I think of it, I feel how silly I was to plan for an elaborate South Indian meal. Okay..so..back to the funny part. I made dosa filling and Sambhar keeping in mind my mom’s measurement. Now, knowing the potato size, you can imagine the quantity of potato sabji that must have been brought on the table.:) (I know, you are having a smile on your face). The same happened with sambhar. I made so much of sambar, which was more than enough for not just 4 families but for our entire building.

But “galti karna insaan ki fitrat hai, aur un galtiyon se seekhna samajhdaar hone ki nishani”. After 14 years, I still remember this incident. And I never repeated this mistake.:)

Sometimes, new places, new things, and new experiences give a reason to smile. Later, when we think about it, it makes us feel silly, sometimes proud, and sometimes happy. Do you have any such moments?
